Dr. David Young is the Medical Director for the Namib Race 2024. He is an Emergency Medicine Doctor who currently practices medicine in an academic hospital in Denver, Colorado where he also teaches wilderness medicine to residents and fellows which fits perfectly as his interests include wilderness medicine, human performance, extreme environments, and race medicine. Dr. Dave completed his residency through Harvard University's emergency medicine residency program followed by a fellowship in Wilderness Medicine at the University of Colorado. He had graduated magna cum laude from the University of Redlands in 2003. At Boston University he completed his Masters in Exercise Physiology in 2005 and Nutrition in 2006, followed by his Doctorate in 2010 where he was named a Massachusetts Medical Society Scholar. Not only is Dr. Dave well qualified as a doctor he also loves to be involved in all aspects of ultra endurance events - both as an athlete as well as providing medical support as a volunteer. The Namib Race 2024 is his seventh time working on the medical team of a RacingThePlanet Ultramarathon having already worked at the Atacama Crossing 2012, the Namib Race 2016 and 2022 (also in Namibia), RacingThePlanet: New Zealand 2019, the Atacama Crossing 2019 and the Gobi March 2023. He also successfully completed RacingThePlanet: Patagonia as a racer in 2017. When he is not working his interests include international travel, contemporary art, photography and many outdoor sports, including distance running, rock climbing and cycling.

Patrick Burns, M.D. is faculty member in the Department of Emergency Medicine at Stanford University School of Medicine in Palo Alto, California.
After completing studies at Tufts University School of Medicine (Boston, MA, US) and an Emergency Medicine residency at the University of Washington (Seattle, WA, US) he completed fellowship training in wilderness medicine at Stanford University.
Dr. Patrick has worked as medical staff at several RacingThePlanet and 4 Deserts races including RacingThePlanet: Ecuador 2015, the Atacama Crossing 2016 and 2019, the Gobi March 2017, the Namib Race 2022 and the Gobi March 2023. In addition, he competed in RacingThePlanet: Patagonia 2017, finishing the arduous race. When not working in the Emergency Department, this active doctor enjoys his outdoor lifestyle: skiing, running, hiking, rock climbing, distance cycling, triathlons and adventure races are in his list of favorite things, in addition to traveling and cooking. Dr. Patrick joins the Namib Race 2024 as a member of the Medical Team.

Ellen Stein is an Emergency Medicine physician based in Vermont, USA with a special interest in Emergency Medical Services and Wilderness Medicine. She is a DiMM (Diploma in Mountain Medicine) certified Wilderness medicine instructor for SOLO and has worked in remote areas such as the Himalayan Rescue Association outpost in Manang, Nepal on the Annapurna Circuit. An avid cyclist and skier, she brings her experience and love for the outdoors to the Namib Race 2024. This is Ellen's second time volunteering at a RacingThePlanet / 4 Deserts event, the first being Atacama Crossing 2019.
Yeu-Shin (Cindy) CHANG

Dr. Yeu-Shin Cindy (CJ) Chang is a Board-Certified Emergency Medicine physician at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts. She is an expert on austere and rural medicine and also works as a physician and researcher to improve healthcare delivery in some of the most remote locations in the US, including on the Navajo Nation in southeast Arizona, at Supai Village at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and in Inupiat villages in northwest Alaska above the Arctic Circle. Dr. Chang has worked on all seven continents, most recently with long-term roles in the US, Africa, Middle East, and Antarctica. Dr. Chang completed her undergraduate and Master of Engineering degrees at Cornell University; M.D. and Master of Public Health degrees at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner College of Medicine and Case Western Reserve University; and Emergency Medicine residency at Harvard at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital. She grew up in Japan, Taiwan, and the US, and is a native speaker of English, Japanese, Mandarin Chinese, and Taiwanese. The Namib Race 2024 is Dr. Chang’s first time on the RacingThePlanet / 4 Deserts medical team.
Sarah SCHLEIN, M.D.

Dr. Sarah Schlein is an Emergency Medicine physician, Wilderness Medicine Director in Burlington, VT, and Associate Professor at the Larner College of Medicine. She founded and directs the medical school and residency wilderness medicine programs and developed and directs the Wilderness Medicine Fellowship. She is fellowship-trained in medical education and has a FAWM and DiMM through the Wilderness Medical Society.
