Hi Everyone. Stage 1 Done and I’m dusted. 35.3km for Stage 1 today and things didn’t quite go as planned. A nice start, planning to just hike most of it today because we’re at above 3,000m sea level and there is definitely the effects of altitude for those who are used to it or fully acclimatized.

About to leave checkpoint 1 (10km) I felt a bad headache coming on and couldn’t locate my Panadol quickly so just figured I’d literally drown out the headache through my hydration but it didn’t work and the checkpoint 2 was 13km away. I soldiered through to checkpoint 2, found and popped the Panadol and came good. I was able to pick up the pace a little hiking and make up some time and placing.

The aftermath of Stage 1 included identical blisters on the outside of each heel, stiff and sore shoulders from carrying a 13kg pack (I weighed in heavier than I’d planned), and toes a bit sore from a lot of downhill. I’ve since had the blisters popped, drained and cleaned. I’ll let them air and cover them up for stage 2. I’ve ditched a little weight through food and a couple of other items.

Despite being on my feet 8 hours and the aftermath, tomorrow’s another day.

Thanks for the encouragement and support and PLEASE keep the emails coming.

Regards,

Jason

So it's the Friday before the Saturday of race brief, gear check and bus out to start of the race for the Sunday morning start at 8:00 am local time. Transferred from the hostel I was to the race hotel. Had to check out at 11:00 but can't check in until 3:00. Feeling somewhat acclimatised locally but the start is up another 500m to 3,000m (or something like that). When I arrived and looked around I at the other competitors and wondered if I was out of my league here. Thanks to a friendly bunch of people and especially those that have raced before they gave me some relative comfort and encouragement. Weird sitting and lounging around when in 48hrs we'll be winding up Stage 1 ?
