Discover Namibia - Travel Ideas for your time in Namibia
One of the best things about competing in RacingThePlanet ultramarathons is the amazing locations. In Namibia we have picked a country with spectacular scenery, culture and wildlife in one of the safest places to travel in Africa. Why not take advantage of your time in this amazing country by adding on a tour before or after your race experience?
There are many different options, routes and ways to see the country. One of the best is to hire a 4WD car and see Africa from the ground. There are many lodges dotted around the most popular areas with accommodation from budget to the more luxury end of the market.
Heading north from Swakopmund you will reach Etosha National Park with its abundant wildlife. After a day driving around the national park spotting wildlife, sit by the waterhole at your camp and watch the wildlife come to you whilst you watch the sun set on the day. Elephants, giraffe, rhino, lions, antelope and many more species are daily visitors to the waterhole.

There are many indigenous tribes around Namibia. Just south of Etosha National Park is a chance to spend some time at Omapaha Himba tribe village which was established to conserve Himba culture and tradition. It also doubles as an orphanage that is currently caring for 36 orphans and the guided tours help fund the project. The children love to see themselves in your photos so you will have no shortage of photo opportunities with them.

The iconic landscapes of Sossusvlei are truly awe inspiring. A salt and clay pan surrounded by high red sand dunes, it’s located in the southern part of the Namib Desert in the Namib-Naukluft National Park. The dunes reach a height of 300 meters, the highest in the world. Take a scenic drive through the national park and watch the sun go down or, for the more adventurous of you, take in the view from your quad bike.

There is no better way to relax after a day’s sightseeing and wandering through the trails around Waterburg National Park. Waterburg has a rhino breeding programme and has released rhino to repopulate other national parks around the country.
